Ioannis Koubourlis was born in Athens in 1970. He studied Sociology at Panteion University (1988-1992). He continued his studies at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris, where he was awarded his master’s degree (1993) and his doctorate (2000).

He has been a Researcher at the Institute of Neohellenic Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation and has taught at the University of the Aegean as well as at the postgraduate program “Political Science and History” of Panteion University. From 2010 to 2024 he served as a faculty member in the field of “Historical Sociology of Modern Greek Society” at the Department of Sociology of the University of Crete, while since 2024 he is Associate Professor of Political and Historical Sociology at the Department of Political Science of the University of Crete. He has also been an Invited Professor at EHESS in Paris.

His books on La formation de l’histoire nationale grecque. L’apport de Spyridon Zambélios (1815-1881) (Athens 2005) and Historiographical Influences upon Sp. Zambelios and C. Paparrigopoulos. Greek and Foreigner Scholars’ Contribution Towards Forming the Tripartite Scheme of Greek Historicism (1782-1846) (Athens 2012, in Greek) have been published by the Institute of Historical Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation. He has also edited and prefaced, in collaboration with Nikos Vafeas, the collection of epistemological texts entitled Historical sociology. Object and method (Sakis Karagiorgas Foundation & Savalas Publications, Athens 2014, in Greek) and the Greek editions of Richard Lachmann’s What is Historical Sociology? (Alexandria, Athens 2018) and Tom Bottomore’s Political Sociology (Pedio, Athens 2023).
